John Flavel (1630 – 1691) was a pastor's son. At 16, he attended University College at the University of Oxford. At 20, Flavel was sent, examined, and ordained as an assistant pastor at a congregation in Diptford, and years later he took a pastoral calling to the congregation at Dartmouth. Flavel was a Christian acquainted with sorrow, experienced the deaths of three wives, a son, and persecution as being a non-conformist pastor during the Act of Uniformity in England. Flavel's knowledge of divinity was not only profound and systematic but was devotional and practical. He was as eminent a Christian as he was a theologian.
